The short answer
Mural installation in Boca Raton starts with exact wall measurements before you order, so the image is printed to size with bleed. We prime the wall, hang panels in sequence from a plumb line, and align the image across every seam.
A wallpaper mural is a single image printed across a set of numbered panels: a tropical canopy, a misty mountain range, an old-world map, a hand-painted chinoiserie scene. Unlike repeating wallpaper, the panels must go up in exact order and alignment, or the picture breaks apart at the seams. In Boca Raton we hang murals in nurseries, dining rooms, home theaters, offices and stairwells, coming up from our Pompano Beach base about six miles to the south. This page explains how we plan a mural for your wall, what the wall needs before printing, and what to expect on installation day.
Measure first, order second
The most common mural problem has nothing to do with hanging. It happens at checkout, when someone orders a mural sized to rough wall dimensions and discovers the image does not reach a corner, or that a key part of the scene lands behind a TV. Walls in South Florida homes are often not quite square, especially in older concrete-block houses where plaster thickness varies from top to bottom.
We measure width at three heights and height at three points, note windows, doors and outlets, and recommend how much bleed to add on each side so that trimming at the ceiling and baseboard does not cut into the image. We can also help you decide where the focal point of the scene should sit relative to furniture.
- Exact width and height, measured at several points
- Location of switches, vents and thermostats
- Recommended bleed for trimming
- Placement of the main subject relative to a bed, sofa or desk
- Material choice: paper, nonwoven or vinyl
Matching the material to the room
Mural makers usually print on nonwoven, traditional paper or vinyl substrates. Nonwoven is popular because it goes up with paste applied to the wall and comes off dry later. Vinyl-coated murals stand up better in kitchens, kids' rooms and bathrooms, where splashes and fingerprints happen. Peel-and-stick murals exist too, but in a Boca Raton home that holds high humidity during the summer storm season, their adhesive can lose grip on painted walls, and we typically recommend paste-applied versions for anything meant to last.
Wall preparation for a printed image
A mural shows every flaw beneath it more than a busy pattern does, because large areas of sky, water or flat color reveal bumps and ridges in raking light. We fill nail holes, sand down old texture, and correct dents so the surface is as flat as practical. A tinted primer then evens out the color of the wall; a white panel over a patch of gray joint compound can look faintly different.
If the room has fresh paint, it needs time to cure before paper goes over it. We will ask when the wall was last painted and plan around that date.
Installation day, panel by panel
We lay the panels out on a clean floor in order and confirm the numbering against the supplier's diagram. A laser or plumb line sets the first edge, because a mural that starts even slightly off vertical drifts more with every panel. Each panel is pasted or hung according to its type, aligned to the image on its neighbor, and smoothed from the center outward.
Where a panel wraps an inside corner, we split it and overlap slightly so the image continues without a visible gap. Around outlets, we cut neatly and reinstall plates. When the last panel is trimmed, we step back with you and check alignment from where you will usually view the wall.
Mural ideas that suit Boca Raton homes
Botanical and palm-leaf scenes are natural in homes that open onto a pool or garden. Soft watercolor skies and abstract washes suit modern condos with clean lines. Detailed toile, landscape or chinoiserie panels give formal dining rooms a traditional character. For children's rooms, we often suggest scenes that can grow with the child rather than a single cartoon theme.
