The short answer
For a custom or photo mural in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, start with a high-resolution image, get exact wall measurements before printing, and choose a pasted material suited to humid air. We measure, prep the wall and hang the panels in sequence, usually in one day.
A mural can be a stock image from a wallpaper catalog, a commissioned illustration, or even a photograph you took yourself, enlarged and printed to fit a wall. In a beach town like Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, people often want something personal: a shot of the shoreline at dawn, a vintage-style map of the coast, a tropical scene for a child's room. Creative Wallpaper Installer, roughly seven miles north in Pompano Beach, installs murals of all kinds in homes and condos here. This page focuses on what to think about when you are having a custom or photo mural printed, along with how we prepare and hang it.
Turning your own photo into a mural
Printing a personal photo at wall size is appealing, but image quality matters a lot. A picture that looks sharp on a phone may look soft or pixelated when it is stretched to eight or nine feet tall. Most mural printers will check your file and tell you whether it has enough resolution for the size you want. Photos taken on a good camera in good light hold up much better than cropped or zoomed images.
Think about composition too. A wide, simple scene with a clear horizon line usually works better on a wall than a busy close-up. Keep in mind that a band at the top and bottom of the image will be trimmed off during installation, so the important parts should not sit right at the edges.
- Use the original, full-size file, not a screenshot or a version sent by text message.
- Ask the printer to confirm resolution for your wall's dimensions before you pay.
- Leave margin around key subjects so trimming does not cut them off.
- Consider how light the image is; very dark murals can make a small room feel enclosed.
Measurements the printer needs
We measure the wall's height and width in several places, because walls in older homes and condos are rarely perfectly square. We note doors, windows, outlets, vents and anything else that interrupts the surface, and tell you how much bleed to add on each side. With those numbers, the printer can size and split the image into panels that will cover the wall with room to trim.
If you would like a mural that wraps around a corner or continues onto a ceiling, we plan that before ordering, since the way the image is divided affects how it will look once installed.
Material choice for a coastal home
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea sits right on the ocean, and humid air comes in whenever a door or slider is open. Pasted murals on a non-woven or vinyl base handle that environment well. Self-adhesive peel-and-stick murals are convenient, but they can lose grip at the edges and seams in damp conditions, so we generally recommend them only for very dry, well-conditioned rooms or short-term use.
For rooms with lots of activity, like a playroom or a family room, a vinyl-coated mural can be wiped clean. For a bedroom or study, a matte non-woven gives a softer, painterly look and reduces glare from windows.
Preparing and hanging
We repair and smooth the wall and apply a wallcovering primer. Large, pale areas of sky or sand in the image show what is underneath, so we make sure the wall is an even color. On install day we lay out the panels in order, check the image, set the first panel to a plumb line and match each following panel exactly to it. Seams are rolled flat, paste is cleaned off the surface, and edges are trimmed at the end.
We then reinstall fixtures and clean the room. Most murals are complete in a single working day.
Panels on most residential murals are butted edge to edge rather than overlapped, which means the first strip has to be exactly vertical and every seam has to be pressed closed without stretching the paper. Stretching a wet panel to close a gap distorts the image and often shrinks back as it dries, leaving a hairline of wall showing. We let the paper do the work, adjust gently, and check each seam with a light held at an angle before moving on.
Mural ideas for beach-town living
Popular choices here include soft tropical foliage, watercolor seascapes, coastal maps and abstract compositions in sandy, aqua and coral tones. Murals also work well in places that do not have a view, such as an interior hallway, a home gym or a windowless bathroom, where the image provides something to look at. We also hang murals for homeowners in Wilton Manors, Oakland Park and North Lauderdale.
