Grasscloth Installation in Parkland, FL

The short answer

Grasscloth in a Parkland home works best in dry rooms such as offices, dining rooms and bedrooms, hung over a smooth, primed wall or liner. Panels are inspected and sequenced for color before hanging, because natural fibers vary from roll to roll and seams always show a little.

Woven grasscloth adds a texture you can almost feel from across the room, and in a spacious Parkland home it can turn a large, plain wall into the warmest surface in the house. It is also one of the least forgiving wallcoverings to hang. The fibers stain if paste touches them, seams cannot be hidden by a pattern, and long panels on tall walls amplify every small error. We come out from Pompano Beach, about 10 miles to the east, to install sisal, jute, seagrass and other natural weaves in homes across 33067 and 33076. Here is what a careful grasscloth project looks like from roll to finished wall.

Rolls are inspected before any paste is mixed

Every grasscloth roll is a little different. Fibers are harvested, dyed and woven by hand or semi-hand processes, so tone and thickness can shift between rolls and even within one. Before installation we open each roll, check for flaws such as knots, gaps or stains, and confirm all rolls share the same run number.

We then cut panels and lay them side by side to compare in daylight. The most consistent panels are assigned to the wall you see first, while panels with more variation go into corners, behind furniture or over doors. That sequencing is the single biggest factor in a wall that looks calm instead of striped.

Tall walls and long drops

Many Parkland homes have high ceilings in great rooms, foyers and primary bedrooms. A wet grasscloth panel is heavy and can stretch or crease if it is handled carelessly over a long drop. We fold, or book, the pasted panel loosely so the paste can relax the backing evenly, and we hang from stable ladders or scaffolding so we can guide the full length without dragging it across the wall.

Long seams are also where shade differences become most noticeable. Careful sequencing and a dead-straight first panel keep those seams even all the way up.

Smooth, sealed and tinted walls underneath

Woven fibers are not opaque, and the backing paper is thin. Light from the side can expose texture, patches or paint ridges behind it, and a dark or uneven wall color can shadow through lighter weaves. Our prep covers both problems.

  • Skim coat or sand down orange peel and knockdown texture
  • Repair holes, dents and loose drywall tape
  • Apply a wallcovering primer, tinted close to the backing color if needed
  • Hang a liner paper on walls that need extra smoothing or future easy removal

Rooms that suit grasscloth best

Grasscloth is happiest in rooms with steady temperatures and no splashing water. In Parkland homes that usually means a dining room, home office, library or den, a primary bedroom headboard wall, or a formal living area. It pairs naturally with wood, stone and soft neutrals, and it softens sound slightly in big open rooms with hard floors.

We advise against it in bathrooms with showers, kitchens, laundry rooms and spaces where small children or pets will touch the walls often. For those areas, a vinyl with a woven look gives a similar effect and can be wiped clean.

Keeping grasscloth healthy in a humid climate

South Florida summers are long and muggy, with the wet season stretching from about May into October. Natural fibers absorb moisture from the air, so rolls should acclimate inside the air-conditioned house for a day or two before we hang them. Keeping the AC running at a steady setting afterward helps the panels stay flat and tight at the seams.

During hurricane season, a long power outage can let indoor humidity climb. A short spell is usually fine; extended dampness is worth addressing as soon as power returns. For everyday care, a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment is all grasscloth needs. We install it in Parkland as well as Coconut Creek, Margate, North Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach and Boca Raton.

After measuring and checking the walls, we explain what prep is needed, how many rolls to order and how long the job should take.

  3. Respect for your home

Drop cloths go down first, paste is wiped off trim as we go, and we leave the room ready to use at the end of each day.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 823-3201 and we’ll talk it through.

Why does grasscloth look different from panel to panel?

It is made from natural fibers that vary in color and thickness. We sequence panels by shade so the most consistent ones land on the most visible wall.

Can grasscloth go on a very tall wall?

Yes. Long drops need extra care and stable scaffolding, but grasscloth can look striking on a tall wall in a great room or foyer.

Is grasscloth a good idea in a Parkland bathroom?

Not near a shower or tub. A woven-look vinyl is a better choice where moisture and splashing are regular.

Do you hang a liner under grasscloth?

Often, especially on textured or patched walls. A liner creates a smooth base and protects the drywall when the paper is eventually removed.

How should I clean grasscloth?

Dust it with a soft brush or a vacuum brush attachment. Avoid water and sprays, and blot any spill right away.
