The short answer
Wallpaper removal in Highland Beach involves identifying the paper type, stripping it without damaging the wall, washing off adhesive and repairing any torn surfaces. Most rooms take one day, with extra time if the wall needs skim coating.
A lot of Highland Beach units still carry the wallpaper chosen when they were first decorated: seashell borders in the bath, palm prints in the kitchen, foil papers in the powder room. Taking it down is rarely as simple as pulling a corner. Depending on the paper, the adhesive and what was under it, removal can leave walls clean and ready for paint, or it can tear the face of the drywall and expose decades of glue. Creative Wallpaper Installer, about nine miles south in Pompano Beach, removes old wallcoverings in Highland Beach homes with the goal of leaving a sound, smooth wall behind.
Why removal is not always simple
Older papers were often hung directly over unprimed drywall, which means the paste bonded to the paper face of the board itself. When you pull the wallpaper, the drywall paper comes with it, leaving a fuzzy brown surface that will bubble if you paint over it. Other walls have two or three layers of paper stacked on top of one another, or paper that was painted over at some point, which seals it and blocks water from reaching the paste.
Moisture adds another variable. In a humid coastal climate, bathroom paper may have loosened in some spots and fused hard in others. Kitchens near the stove may have grease that has soaked through. We test a small area first to understand what we are dealing with before committing to a method.
Foil, mylar and grasscloth papers each add their own wrinkle. Foils are non-porous, so water cannot pass through them until the face is removed or carefully perforated. Grasscloth often leaves its paper backing firmly stuck to the wall after the fibers come away. Borders tend to be hung with a stronger adhesive than the paper around them, and in some homes they were applied right on top of an existing wallcovering. Knowing what is on the wall before we begin keeps the process predictable and the damage to a minimum.
Our removal process
We start by protecting floors, baseboards, cabinets and fixtures, since removal is wet and messy. Electrical plates are taken off and outlets are covered. Then we work in steps:
- Dry-strip the top layer where possible, especially on vinyl and strippable papers that release from their backing.
- Score or perforate sealed papers carefully so water can reach the paste without gouging the wall.
- Soak the backing with warm water and a removal solution, letting it dwell until the paste softens.
- Scrape gently with wide blades held at a low angle to avoid digging into drywall or plaster.
- Wash the wall to remove leftover adhesive, which would otherwise cause paint to crack or new paper to fail.
- Let the wall dry fully before any repairs or primer.
Repairing what is underneath
Once the paper is off, we can see the true condition of the wall. Small gouges and nail holes are filled. Torn drywall face paper is sealed with a primer made for that purpose, then skim coated and sanded smooth. Cracks along joints, common in concrete-block buildings that move slightly over time, are taped and finished. If the wall has stains from old leaks, we note them and use a stain-blocking primer.
This repair stage is what separates a wall that looks good after paint from one that shows ghost seams and bubbles. It can add time, but it is the part of the job you will notice most later.
Planning removal in a Highland Beach condo
Removal generates wet debris and needs water access, so we plan for that within your building's rules. Many associations want debris bagged and carried out through a service elevator, and some limit work to weekdays. If your unit is closed during the summer, we can coordinate access with a property manager or neighbor.
Timing matters too. Walls need to dry before primer and paint, and that takes longer in the humid wet season. Running the air conditioning helps. If you plan to repaper rather than paint, we can often prep and hang during the same project so the room is out of service for less time.
Signs the old paper should come off
Seams lifting at the corners, bubbles in the middle of strips, brown staining along edges or a musty smell behind paper in a bathroom are all reasons to remove rather than paint over. Painting over failing wallpaper usually traps the problem and makes later removal harder. If you are unsure, we can look at the walls and tell you which path makes sense, whether that is full removal, spot repair or leaving sound paper alone. We provide the same service in Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach and Lighthouse Point.
