Grasscloth Wallpaper Installation for Lighthouse Point Homes

The short answer

Grasscloth works well in Lighthouse Point living rooms, bedrooms, offices and dining rooms that stay dry and are shielded from harsh sun. We avoid it in wet rooms, hang it with clear-drying adhesive over a lined, primed wall, and plan seams so color shifts between strips read as part of the material.

Grasscloth brings woven texture and a relaxed, natural tone that fits the coastal character of Lighthouse Point, but it is also the least forgiving wallcovering we hang. The fibers are real plant material, often sea grass, jute, sisal or arrowroot, laced onto a paper backing by hand. Each roll varies a little in color, the seams always show, and water marks it permanently. Living about a mile southeast of our Pompano Beach base, Lighthouse Point owners deal with ocean air, long humid summers and bright windows, all of which matter for a natural fiber. Below we explain where grasscloth thrives in a local home, where it struggles, and how we handle it so the finished wall looks intentional instead of patchy.

Rooms where natural fiber makes sense here

The best spots are interior rooms with steady air conditioning and indirect light. A study lined in sisal, a dining room wrapped in a pale sea grass, or a bedroom headboard wall in a tight jute weave all hold up well. These rooms see few splashes, little steam and limited direct sun, which is exactly what plant fibers need.

We are more cautious with the places homeowners near the water often ask about first. A sunroom or a wall facing a big slider toward the yard can bleach the fibers within a few seasons, and since grasscloth is dyed rather than printed, faded areas cannot be touched up. Kitchens, full baths and laundry rooms are a no for true grasscloth because splatter and steam leave stains that never come out. For those rooms we show vinyl papers that imitate the woven look while standing up to water.

Why the seams and shading look the way they do

Every bolt is woven from natural strands, so color and thickness drift slightly from one edge to the other and from roll to roll. When two strips meet, the change in shade is visible. That is a trait of the product, not a flaw in the hanging, and manufacturers say so on the label. What an installer can control is how the variation is arranged.

Before cutting anything we unroll every bolt and compare them in the room's actual light. Rolls from the same run are kept together on one wall. Strips can be reverse hung, flipping every other one top to bottom, when the maker recommends it to soften edge shading. We place the most noticeable seams in corners or behind furniture where possible and keep the most consistent strips on the wall you see first from the doorway.

  • Inspect all rolls for run numbers and visible defects before cutting
  • Sort strips by shade and assign them to walls on purpose
  • Reverse hang alternating strips when the manufacturer calls for it
  • Butt seams tightly without overlapping or rolling them flat
  • Keep adhesive off the fiber face entirely

Prep that protects a delicate material

Grasscloth is thin enough that any bump, patch or old seam beneath it will show. Many Lighthouse Point houses are concrete block with drywall or plaster inside, and older interiors may have years of paint and repairs layered on. We sand and skim those areas flat, then apply a primer suited to the adhesive. On walls that are less than ideal we hang a liner paper first, which smooths the surface and gives the grasscloth an even base that dries at a consistent rate.

A dark wall under a pale weave can also ghost through the gaps between fibers, so we may tint the primer close to the grasscloth's background color. It is a small step that makes a light natural paper look richer and more uniform.

Hanging it without marks

Water and paste are the two things that ruin grasscloth. We use a clear-drying adhesive, apply it to the back with care, and book the strips just long enough for the backing to relax. Edges are trimmed with fresh blades because dull ones snag and fray the fibers. Seams are pressed gently by hand rather than rolled hard, which can crush the weave and leave a shiny line.

If a smear does land on the face, it is lifted immediately with a barely damp sponge and blotted dry. Most rooms take a full day or more, since each strip is checked for shade before it goes up and the pace is slower than with standard paper.

Living with grasscloth through the seasons

During the wet season from May through October, indoor humidity climbs whenever the AC is off, and natural fibers can relax and expand. Keep the system running at a steady setting, even when you travel. In the drier months from November into April, the material settles back down. Dust the wall with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a brush tip; never spray cleaners on it.

When hurricane season brings shutters, generators or water leaks, keep an eye on papered walls near windows. A small leak behind grasscloth will wick and stain fast, so call us early if you see discoloration.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 823-3201 and we’ll talk it through.

Can grasscloth go in a bathroom in Lighthouse Point?

We do not recommend true grasscloth in a full bath. A powder room with no shower and good ventilation is sometimes workable, but a vinyl faux grasscloth is the safer choice for any room with water.

Why can I see the seams?

Natural fiber is woven in strips, so seams and shade differences always show to some degree. We arrange strips so the variation looks deliberate.

Will ocean air damage grasscloth?

Salt air mostly matters near open doors and windows. In a closed, air-conditioned room it is the humidity level and direct sunlight that affect the fibers most.

How do I clean it?

Use a soft brush or a vacuum brush attachment. Avoid water and spray cleaners, which leave marks on the fibers.

Can grasscloth be removed later?

Yes. Because we prime and often line the wall first, the paper can be stripped without tearing up the drywall underneath.

Do you install grasscloth in nearby cities?

We do, including Hillsboro Beach, Deerfield Beach, Coconut Creek, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea and Boca Raton.

Ready to talk about your walls?

Tell us which room you are thinking about, where you live and what paper you have in mind. We will set up a visit to measure and look at the surface.
